78 treatment centers across California that work with ComPsych.

Every one of the 78 California treatment programs in our directory records ComPsych among the plans it accepts — and a few things about this group of programs are genuinely unlike the rest of our national listings. Adventure therapy is offered by 15 of the 77 California programs that report their therapy list, dramatically more common here than across the directory as a whole, and 12 of the 55 that describe their amenities note an ocean view. That is California-specific: coastal residential campuses and wilderness-adjacent programs simply exist here in a way they do not in most states.
None of that tells you what your own plan will pay. ComPsych often administers behavioral health benefits or an employee assistance program on behalf of an employer, which means two people who both say "I have ComPsych" can have very different authorization rules, session limits and network requirements. Coverage depends entirely on your individual policy, so the only reliable answer comes from verifying your benefits directly — and we can help you do that at no cost.
Sixty-six of the 78 California programs listed offer residential rehab and 66 offer intensive outpatient, with 70 providing standard outpatient. That range is what makes a plan-driven step-down realistic in a state where the intensive phase and the maintenance phase often happen in different counties.
Sixty-eight of the 78 programs offer dual-diagnosis or co-occurring care, 71 treat co-occurring disorders, 67 address PTSD and trauma, and 66 treat depression. Twenty-four record treating suicidal ideation, notably more common among these listings than across the directory nationally.
Between the Oregon border and the Mexican border, distance is the real barrier — not availability. Many people combine a metro admission with telehealth outpatient follow-up at home, and 55 of the 78 programs also accept Military or TRICARE coverage if a household has more than one benefit source.
Seventy-seven of the 78 programs use evidence-based approaches, 59 use trauma-informed care and 61 also offer holistic services; 74 provide individual therapy, 73 use CBT and 70 offer family therapy. At least 48 hold Joint Commission accreditation and at least 43 are state licensed.
California's coverage landscape has two layers worth understanding. State-regulated commercial plans must cover medically necessary treatment for substance use and mental health conditions under California's parity law, judged against generally accepted standards of care rather than an insurer's internal cost formula — which is why some Californians successfully get residential or PHP care authorized that a plan initially questioned. Self-funded employer plans, common among large California employers, are governed by federal rules instead. Asking your benefits administrator which type you have changes what leverage you have in an appeal.
Medi-Cal runs alongside all of this through county-administered behavioral health systems, and it matters even for people with commercial coverage: 58 of the 78 programs we list accept Medicaid, so if a job ends mid-treatment there may be a path to continue care. Geography shapes the rest. Residents of the far north, the Sierra foothills and the inland agricultural valleys routinely drive to a metro for detox or residential admission, then step down to outpatient or telehealth at home.
ComPsych is best known for administering employee assistance programs (EAPs) and behavioral health benefits on behalf of employers, so what you have may be an EAP authorization, a managed behavioral health benefit, or both layered onto a medical plan. In California that distinction matters, because EAP sessions and full treatment benefits are authorized differently — we can help you read your plan documents and ask the right question when you call.
Every one of the 78 California programs in our directory records ComPsych among the plans it accepts, and 73 of the 78 accept private insurance generally. That reflects what each program has told us, not a promise about your specific plan — benefits, authorization requirements and network status all depend on your individual policy and have to be verified before admission.
California's mental health parity law requires state-regulated commercial plans to cover medically necessary treatment for substance use and mental health conditions, using generally accepted standards of care rather than an insurer's own internal cost criteria. Self-funded employer plans are governed by federal law instead, so ask your HR or benefits contact which category your plan falls into.
Generally not at the same time for the same episode of care, but many Californians move between them — for example using Medi-Cal after commercial coverage ends, or vice versa. Of the 78 programs listed here, 58 accept Medicaid, which gives you options if your employment or coverage situation changes mid-treatment.
That is extremely common in California, where the distance between an inland or far-northern town and the nearest residential program can be several hours. People often start with telehealth outpatient care locally, then travel for a residential or detox admission; 70 of the 78 programs listed offer standard outpatient and 66 offer intensive outpatient, so step-down care can often continue closer to home.
Language access varies by program, so it is worth asking directly. In our California listings, at least 62 offer services in English, at least 12 in Spanish, at least 7 in ASL and at least 4 in Russian — a useful starting filter in a state where a household's first language often shapes whether family therapy actually works.
If someone is in immediate danger, call 911. For a mental health or suicidal crisis, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline any time. Twenty-four of the 78 California programs we list record treating suicidal ideation, and a crisis line can help you decide what level of care to look for next.
Recovery Dawn is a free informational and referral service. We do not bill you, we are not a treatment provider or an insurance company, and some calls connect you with treatment providers who advertise with us — we say so plainly so you always know who you are talking to.
Have your ComPsych member ID or EAP code and your employer's plan name nearby, and jot down which county you can realistically travel to and whether telehealth would work for your schedule. Then call us and we will walk through what your plan documents say and which of the 78 California programs might fit — free, with no obligation. If you are in crisis right now, call or text 988, or 911 for an emergency.
